I noticed there are a lot of different options and companies etc, but which ones can i trust?

What is a good way to go about buying physical gold? What are some good places to start looking?

Thanks - any advice would be very helpful

Bying physical is will depreciate in value is what gold dealers will tell you when you go to sell it back to them, I've bought physical gold and still have it but do your research and make sure it's what you want because have the gold at hand is a safe way to secure your investments but. www.apmex.com is a good place but don't take my word for it.

Uh.. I don't think it's a good idea to buy physical gold if you're trying to resell it for profit. But for personal use.. Sure

Buying gold traded ETFs is a better option than holding physical gold. The liquidity offered by both is roughly same but maintaining physical stock of gold is not only risky but may also prove more expensive. ETFs are more useful in this regard since they : 1) have no storage risks 2)can be readily converted into cash.
